The Sunrise Preservation Properties
From the deserts of Anza-Borrego to the peaks of El Capitan and the forests and meadows in between, we’re working with our partners to preserve forever more than 11,000 acres of important habitat.
This is one of the largest habitat preservation efforts in the region’s history. Close to two dozen properties were researched and selected for preservation. Many of these properties will become public lands as part of the Cleveland National Forest or Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, with the others managed by local conservation groups or local and regional governments.
Our support has ensured that the properties are not just preserved but actively monitored and managed as sanctuaries for endangered and threatened species. These include:
Arroyo toad
Peninsular bighorn sheep
Quino checkerspot butterfly…

What was once a military facility and home to discarded fuel tanks is today one of the largest estuaries on the West Coast and thriving with hundreds of bird species and fish.

The wetlands are roughly three times the size of SeaWorld…

Preserving the Precious Habitat for California’s Endangered Species
SDG&E and our partners have preserved and restored habitats for several of Southern California’s endangered and threatened species. These habitats include the San Dieguito wetlands on the coast of Del Mar, as well as the Sunrise Preservation project that preserved more than 11,000 acres of deserts, forests, streams and other important habitats in San Diego’s backcountry.
