Getting started with HAN devices
Step 1: Determine if you're eligible
Before you buy a Home and Business Area Network device, please make sure you meet the following criteria:
You have an active SDG&E account
You have a compatible electric smart meter (not a legacy analog meter)
You have a place for the device in your home or business that is within 75 feet of your smart meter
Step 2: Purchase your device
The device you purchase must:
Be SDG&E Smart Meter compatible
Must be ZigBee-enabled and Smart Energy Profile 1.0 or 1.1 certified
HAN device manufacturer web sites and online retailers offer these products. See list of compatible HAN devices.

What do I do if I can't connect my device?
There are many issues that can interfere with the connection process:
Your device must be turned on and plugged in to an energized outlet.
Make sure that your device is located within 75 feet or less from the Smart Meter at your home or business. This is the maximum recommended distance.
Certain types of wireless devices may interfere with the connection to your device. These devices may include microwave, Wi-Fi router, cordless phone, baby monitor, etc.
