Upgrade Project
Overview
The Transmission Line (TL) 13804 Wood-to-Steel 138kV project will replace an estimated 15 wood structures within the High Fire Threat District (HFTD) with new fire-resistant steel poles. The work will occur over a 12-mile section from northern La Costa traveling south through Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and ending in Carmel Valley. All work will take place within SDG&E’s right-of-way with the appropriate municipality permits to construct the project.
About the Project
The scope of work includes replacing approximately 15 existing wood pole H-Frame structures with new steel fire-resistant similar pole structures over a non-continuous span of approximately 12 miles. The project will include the transfer of the existing conductor and the fiber optic cable as well as the installation of new conductor at several locations.
As part of the Community Fire Safety Program for SDG&E, this project includes safety and reliability measures that help increase the resiliency of our electric system during extreme weather conditions that are in the HFTD. Additionally, this upgrade will improve inspections and provide electrical system hardening.

What to Expect
SDG&E crews and contractors will work as safely and quickly as possible and make every effort to minimize disruptions such as construction traffic, lane/road closures, dust and noise along the impacted streets. Although not anticipated, our work may require shutting the power off for safety reasons. If so, we will contact you in advance to help make sure you are prepared for a planned outage.
Multiple construction activities may take place that could impact traffic and noise levels. Please note, we will monitor the work hours, traffic control measures and noise restrictions as established by local authorities.
